Mott Highlights Pietersen's Role in Delhi Capitals' Strategy
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India] - On May 5, Delhi Capitals' assistant coach Matthew Mott shared a light-hearted perspective on the significant contributions of team mentor Kevin Pietersen as the competition for playoff spots heats up in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Pietersen has been actively engaging with the Delhi players, providing valuable insights drawn from his extensive experience. Mott, who is part of the coaching team and has closely observed Pietersen's interactions with the players, humorously noted the unique qualities Pietersen brings, while also emphasizing the substantial impact he has had on both emerging talents and seasoned players.
“He doesn’t bring a lot of money, that’s for sure. However, he has been fantastic, constantly sending messages. It frustrates him not being here. His wealth of experience from various environments allows him to reflect on his career and offer fresh perspectives to both young and veteran players,” Mott remarked ahead of DC's match against Hyderabad.
Prior to his role with Delhi, Mott was the head coach for England's white-ball teams until last July. His tenure ended on a disappointing note for the Three Lions in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals, after which he sought opportunities in various franchise leagues.
In addition to his position with Delhi, Mott has also secured a three-year contract with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League. Reflecting on this transition, he stated, “It’s a fresh start for me. After 15 years as a head coach, it’s refreshing. Being a head coach involves a lot of people management, so I’m enjoying this new perspective, coaching players in a more personal manner.”
Delhi Capitals, who began the tournament strongly with an unbeaten streak of four matches, are currently struggling to regain their momentum and sit just outside the playoff qualification zone. With 12 points, DC is positioned fifth and is eager to revive its campaign.
